Snapchat just pushed a couple messages about some cool new features. Seems like these are the highlights and some quick reactions:
- Blue notification means “real time snapchat” Snapchat calls this “putting the chat in Snapchat”. Inside, you have a text conversation (exactly like texting, whatsapp, groupme, etc…) and Snapchat says you can “keep what’s important” and “we get rid of the rest”
- Apparently they “get rid of the rest” on both devices by automatically deleting it all unless someone decides to keep specific messages. If I want to keep 1/10 messages but my friend wants to keep 6/10? We both keep what we want to keep. As clunky and sometimes annoying as the one-off snapchats currently are, they serve a purpose: I snap, I send, it disappears (forget the screenshots and hacking for a second). Adding this “opt into keep ” feature sounds just like an automated version of me going back to my groupme and deleting stuff manually.
- They also introduced a real time video chat feature. Do we care about this? On one hand, so what, I have FaceTime and Skype and hangouts and the list goes on. On the other hand, there’s something to having all of your mobile communications in one place.
- Snapchat is trying to win on a combo of bundling + UI. We’ll see if it works.
